Work Begins To Insert Scope Into Unit 2 Containment, Inspection Thursday
Work has finally begun to insert a radiation proof endoscope camera into the containment of unit 2 at Fukushima Daiichi.
The process was originally intended to happen in December but was put off multiple times. Today workers drilled the access hole. Thursday (Wednesday night US time) they will attempt to insert the camera and look inside of unit 2. Efforts to inspect the building at Chernobyl were done at 6 months. It was six years before a camera was inserted into the reactor vessel of Three Mile Island to inspect the melt down.
Workers practiced the process on Unit 5, a similar design to unit 2 before they conducted the drilling operation at unit 2. The intent is to repeat the process at the other 2 melted down reactors in attempts to access damage and location of the melted fuel mass. Workers received 3 millisieverts of radiation during the drilling operation. TEPCO reported the work went as expected but has not stated if or when the results of the inspection will be made public.
