$49 Radiation Detector For iPhone/iPod Hits Worldwide Market

An all volunteer project started after the Fukushima nuclear disaster has brought their idea to fruition. They wanted to make an inexpensive and portable radiation detector available to people in Japan. Early in the disaster radiation detectors were very hard to find and the prices are still quite prohibitive. Pocket Geiger by Radiation-Watch.org began raising funds through Kickstarter last year. The current version is for iPhone or an iPod touch 3rd or 4th generation with more than 32gb and is focused on sales in Japan. The unit is available for shipping to most places in the world. There was some discussion of developing a version for Android devices, no information is currently available on their website about this possibility. If we hear more from the development team we will post an update.

These new detectors have the potential to put detection equipment in the hands of many more people at an affordable cost and with greater portability. The type 2 version is smaller than a business card and less than .5 inches thick (1.2cm).
