Japan’s JAEA Compares Radiation To “Angry Wife”

Japan’s JAEA created a web page intended to educate women about nuclear energy. Kyodo quotes the agency as saying a social survey told them women were ignorant of the concepts of nuclear power. The JAEA page cited speaking to 6 women from Hitachinaka City as the “survey”.

The page compares radiation to “an angry wife” and the angry wife shouting as radioactivity.  Ex-SKF has a screen shot of the page that has now been removed from their website along with a full translation of the page (also some interesting posts in the comments). This clueless attempt to educate the public has not gone over well with the public. Both the blatantly sexist and demeaning nature of the page and the concept that women in general are ignorant of science and technology. The page has caused a backlash on twitter of angry comments, many from women who work in science or technology. So does JAEA live in a bubble from the 1960’s? Is there office culture so screwed up nobody could point out how horrible an idea this was?
