Radiation Monitoring Data In Japan Systematically Faked Downward
As with so many things going on in relation to the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, people know something isn’t right or outright bogus, yet it takes time to document and prove it. We documented earlier this week about the discrepancies in Miyagi Prefecture in radiation & contamination government figures vs. non government figures for the region including elevated thyroid nodules in children.
In yet another case of this, government radiation monitoring has been being systematically faked to show far lower than actual levels. Academics and an engaged public can and will eventually uncover these lame attempts by the government to deceive the public about the safety risks in Japan due to the nuclear accident.

A few months ago TEPCO mentioned they were decontaminating around monitoring posts under the guise of being able to detect changes better. Workers at the plant questioned TEPCO’s reasoning back then.
What has been found by people on the ground is that many of these monitoring posts dropped in the Fukushima region had clean soil put underneath them, had the area around them decontaminated or even had steel plates put under the monitoring station to make the dose in the monitor appear considerably lower. Many times these efforts make the monitor show about half the dose that really exists even a few steps away from the monitor. All of the monitoring in the region around the evacuation zone would appear to be suspect.
The various monitoring posts around Japan are also not completely correct. Per this MEXT spreadsheet from July 26th you can see that many of the monitoring posts are quite high in the air, likely on building roofs. The one in Miyagi is 80meter off the ground, the government claims they put it on the roof of the govt. building to make maintenance easier.
MEXT makes calculations for what the estimated dose 1 meter off the ground vs. the varied heights of monitoring posts. Looking at examples in the spreadsheet, MEXT’s claim that the adjusted doses are a calculation of the pre-accident background range and the distance of the monitoring station off the ground does not seem to be consistently applied. MEXT also credits the data back on the prefectures, absolving them of any quality control or checking. MEXT monitoring posts around Japan ranged from 1.8 meters off the ground up to 39.4 meters off the ground in Hiroshima.
The public MEXT website for people to check radiation readings in Japan shows the radiation reading however many meters off the ground in big text. The adjusted to 1 meter reading is in fine print off to the side with the details. The map popup readings only show the non adjusted lower reading for each monitoring station taken at the height the meter is located at. This gives the reader the artificially lower number unless they go looking for the 1 meter adjusted number or even know what that means. As can be seen with this reading in Chiba from July 27th, the adjusted reading in fine print is about double the big print number most people will see.
