Temporary Fukushima Waste Facilities Get Mixed Support

The national government and minister Hosono have proposed a series of temporary storage sites inside the evacuation zone to hold ash from incinerated soil and plant debris gathered as part of decontamination attempts in the region. One one hand the dumps could speed up clean up efforts. On another they could render those towns more uninhabitable than they already are. Both evacuated residents and town mayors had mixed opinions on the plans. Hosono’s previous efforts included trying to send contaminated disaster debris to be burned in waste incinerators all over Japan. This was of course met with considerable opposition.
