The Staggering Cost Of The Fukushima Daiichi Disaster
TEPCO announced they needed another 125 billion USD to cover decontamination and compensation for damaged caused outside the plant. TEPCO is attempting to fund the costs at the destroyed nuclear plant itself out of their corporate funds with about 12 billion USD set aside. TEPCO asked for 62.5 billion USD in April to cover decontamination and compensation costs. The 125 billion request is estimated to cover projected costs for only the next two years. This request is 2% of Japan’s entire GDP.
Nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen told the Japan Press Club the disaster total may cost half a trillion USD (500 billion USD). By comparison the Iraq war to date cost about 800 billion USD. The entire 2012 government budget for Germany is 407 billion USD.
