TEPCO Former Chairman Questioned By Prosecutors

The former chairman of TEPCO, owner of the destroyed Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was questioned by prosecutors in a criminal negligence probe.

1300 residents of Fukushima prefecture filed a joint complaint with the prosecutors office that kicked off the probe of 40 people said to be involved in the events that contributed to the disaster. Among the aspects of the criminal investigation are how much was known before the disaster about the potential for an earthquake or tsunami at the plant, if safety upgrades were not done or other efforts to not take precautions at the plant.

Japan’s criminal negligence laws only cover injury or death and do not include the liability of all the homes and businesses lost to the disaster.
