TEPCO Hides Reactor 2 Radiation Data, 11 Days & Counting
TEPCO did inspection work on unit 2 on August 12th, in the midst of the discovery of widespread groundwater leaks at the plant. They reported on August 12th that the took two radiation readings near the pedestal of unit 2 and labeled they “evaluating”. A follow up inspection task was reported on August 14th. No radiation readings for the containment area or worker exposure doses were reported on either report.
Air dose rates do not require any laboratory analysis. These have been done historically on similar work with readings provided on the first report. They are simple sievert per hour type readings that are taken on the fly. TEPCO has released readings before with caveats such as a lack of confidence in the reading. Extremely high radiation readings found in unit 1’s torus were flagged with a possibility of an equipment malfunction but the readings were released.
TEPCO tried excusing their lack of disclosure yesterday by claiming a lack of resources and a need to focus on the out of control water problems. This work at unit 2 was done while the water problem became a crisis and the readings do not require further analysis. So why is TEPCO refusing to make these commonly taken radiation readings public?
