Unit 1’s Groundwater Leak & Starting The Frozen Wall Begins Soon
TEPCO released information about at least one of the groundwater leaks. This one into the unit 1 turbine building basement. TEPCO has known about this leak since at least May of 2011. There was an effort then to dump concrete into the area to slow water intrusion. This was not disclosed to the public until now. So TEPCO has known more about the water problems all along than they have let on. TEPCO now says they will make a new effort to try to further plug the leak location.

TEPCO will also begin work to test run the ice wall in mid October. Test holes will be drilled near unit 4. The test will take a 10 square meter area, drill 30 meters down and inject liquid calcium chloride in pipes an attempt to freeze the soil. If the tests prove positive it will likely be the basis for the construction process of the full wall system.
