Town To Be Built Near Fukushima Daiichi

Municipal authorities announced there is a plan to build a town with the capacity to house 3000 people in Okuma. Okuma is the town that hosts the nuclear disaster site. The chosen site had lower radiation levels than other parts of the town but is quite close to the plant. There is also a government plan to build a long term nuclear waste storage site in the area to house all of the contaminated soil and debris from the region.

The plan is to build all these new homes with the intent that about 2000 of the residents would be working at the disaster site. Nothing was mentioned about the risk of having a population living so close to the plant site. Conditions at the plant are still unstable and could result in larger releases and the need to evacuate anyone nearby.
