Contaminated Zone Found Inside WIPP Mine

The Associated Press is reporting that Thursday’s mine entry effort found widespread contamination the further they went into the mine. It was said to be in the active storage area, that would be panel 7. According to previous WIPP reports no work was going on in the mine at the time after it was shut down by the truck fire weeks earlier.

DOE is still claiming that either a roof collapse or a container puncture by a forklift to be the two possible scenarios. No work was being conducted in the mine so the forklift scenario would not be possible.

After workers found the contamination in the panel area they had to leave the mine as their breathing equipment batteries were running out. The next entry is planned to try to identify the actual source of the contamination. They may use robots to assist in this work.

The WIPP website has no information about this currently.
