Some Spent Fuel From Fukushima Unit 4 To Be Sent To Unit 6

TEPCO is asking for permission to make an unusual change to the removal of spent fuel at unit 4. The common pool has been filling up with the offloaded fuel from unit 4. TEPCO claims that they can’t move spent fuel to dry storage casks fast enough claiming a hold up due to waiting on safety approvals of a cask design. TEPCO has been moving some spent fuel from the common pool to the new dry cask storage facility on the hill for at least a year. Why they now claim a delay due to safety approvals is curious.

The work around being asked for would see spent fuel from unit 4 moved to the spent fuel pool of unit 6. While unit 6 would be a safer location than unit 4’s damaged pool, it obviously is less safe than the common pool or dry cask storage. TEPCO claims this won’t delay the fuel removal plan for unit 4.
