New WIPP Information, Xrays and Analysis

Report to NMED:
A large required report to NMED from WIPP was released earlier this week. The lengthy report explains much about the current situation and contains a good quantity of data in the appendix sections. It is quite heavy on nukespeak and trying to frame the events in the facility in a PR driven light but does provide some useful understanding of the goings on. The report does make some confusing statements. In one instance they state that there is no RH (remote handled) waste in WIPP. There is of course remote handled waste stored in WIPP. There likely was not any RH waste in the process of being handled at the time of the incidents. The report also repeats the inaccurate claim that the bulk of WIPP’s waste is old boots, gloves and pieces of pipe. This is not the case as we have explained here.

WIPP released FAQ:
These additions to the DOE FAQ page for WIPP answers many of the public questions people have had but had not been answered at recent town hall forums. Give this a read to see if your question may have been answered here.

Barrel xrays:
Xray analysis of the exploded barrel was released late last week. The image was taken as part of the intake process of the barrel before it was stored. The video can be viewed here. The imagery shows a cylindrical object floating in a substrate towards the top of the barrel. The top 1/3 of the barrel shows to be a distinctly different color on the xray than the middle 1/3 of the barrel. The middle 1/3 of the barrel appears darker with dense suspended particles swirled in the quite different substrate. The bottom 1/3 of the barrel has again, a lighter substrate and suspended materials than the middle 1/3. This stays true even with xray adjustments during the scan. It was also noted that the burn marks on the outside of the barrel after the explosion are different for the bottom 1/3 of the barrel. The bottom 1/3 remained partially white (painted) while the upper portion of the barrel showed the extreme charring.

Bulging barrel:
There are some new concerns that the barrel at the center of the explosion in room 7 could have some unusual bulging along the bottom area. This image shows the location of concern. It was also noted that the pile of MGO around the bottom of the barrel is less near the white (unburned area) of the lower barrel. This could be an indicator of events with the barrel.

Savannah River plutonium oxide barrels in room 7:
These have been a big concern due to the total amount of plutonium in these barrels. This material is not the “gloves & boots” garbage that DOE frequently claims as being the contents inside WIPP. This material is excess plutonium, turned into an oxide and mixed with an inerting agent. DOE claims these to be “low level” but the claim of low level is due to the mixture with the inerting agent. It is still a considerable amount of pure plutonium, just mixed into another substance. We now have identified locations for the Savannah River plutonium oxide and have related that to the barrels that exploded.

Room 7 map with Savannah River and damaged Los Alamos barrels mapped. Savannah River barrels in purple, Los Alamos damaged barrels in red. This map still needs to have the other suspect Los Alamos barrels identified and flagged to compare them to the proximity of the Savannah River barrels.
