US Nuclear Regulators Suppressing Reactor Tsunami Study
A study of the tsunami risk at Diablo Canyon nuclear plant in California has been raising questions about NRC’s honesty and if they are even taking the risks to US nuclear plants seriously. A 2005 report that found multiple scenarios involving tsunami could kick off a major reactor accident. So where is this report? The NRC has suppressed it since 2005. When they did their review of US reactor safety post Fukushima, surely they included that in their determination and public disclosure? Nope.
Various watchdog groups found out about the 2005 only after it was mentioned in an email that was caught up in an MSNBC FOIA request. Multiple attempts have been made to obtain this report but the NRC has declared the report off limits and will not release it even under FOIA request.
The NRC dismissed the report as being irrelevant or possibly wrong but provided no actual reasons why the report should be ignored. Making things even more suspect is that the NRC will not let anyone outside the NRC see the report so they can determine for themselves if the report is valid or not.
New Times has a great in depth piece on this suppressed study.
