45,000 Rally For End To Nuclear Power In Taiwan

taiwan_201545,000 people attended rallies around Taiwan Saturday in an effort to reform the country’s energy policy. Among the issues in Taiwan are a permanent closures of a new nuclear plant being built and a promise to shut down existing plants by their end of life dates.

A newer issue also being fought is a plan to ship Taiwan’s nuclear waste to France, process it into MOX fuel, then return the waste and the fuel to Taiwan. MOX fuel is considered high risk and was being used in Fukushima Daiichi unit 3 at the time of the disaster in Japan.

“We urge the government to reform its energy policy and focus on green energy and saving energy,” said one of the rally’s organisers Tsui Shu-hsin.  “Politicians should listen to the voices of the people… so Taiwan can become nuclear-free.”
