Second Fukushima Unit 1 Robot Investigation Complete

TEPCO/IRID released a very small selection of video clips from the second investigation that took place over two days along with some photos and handouts.

Previous work that included inserting a scope into containment estimated the water level was just below the catwalk level. Images and video from the new robot inspections hint that they may have seen a visual of that water level through the catwalk floor.

Radiation levels cited by TEPCO were low by comparison. One reading of note that was unusually low was the 6.2 Sv/hour reading near the steam pipes. This location is near the pedestal doorway opening, a location that would be assumed to be higher than elsewhere in containment. This could mean that there isn’t a large mass of fuel inside the pedestal. It does need much more investigation to understand fully if this reading indicates the full situation. Planned probe work to inspect inside the pedestal is planned. This work should give a confirmation on fuel in the pedestal.

TEPCO’s listed radiation levels are difficult to confirm. The video released has only small sections of the inspections. The inspection by the first robot showed significant discrepancies between TEPCO’s posted readings and some of the readings in the video.

The remaining images did not give any significant new information. TEPCO/IRID needs to release the entire video footage of both inspection routes in the name of transparency. It would improve technical understanding of the conditions in the reactor and would follow TEPCO’s most current promise to be up front with the public after they were found yet again hiding inconvenient data from the public.
