Fukushima Unit 1 Inspection Work Completed

TEPCO has announced that they have completed all of the work they can do on the unit 1 containment robot inspection (phase B1). The second robot’s did complete the planned inspection circuit and then took a look at the first robot that remained stranded. The crew did manage to obtain photos of the first robot and now have a better understanding of how it became stranded. Unfortunately the second robot saw its camera degrade to the point they could no longer view to drive it. The second robot will now be abandoned inside containment along with the first one.

stranded_robot1_u1_2015The stranded first robot can be seen partially unfolded at the point it could no longer move. TEPCO noted where it is stuck appears it wedged one side of the robot in an gap on the catwalk that it could not release itself from.

We were also able to roughly estimate the radiation levels found underwater in containment. The radiation levels at the containment floor surface inside unit 1 at the point where they read 24.9 Sv/h on the catwalk would be roughly 8e+15 Sv/h  if there was no water covering it.

IRID/TEPCO did manage to put out a new handout in English explaining some of the new findings

There were also two short videos published of robot #2’s work. It should be noted that some of the reporters at the TEPCO press conference have complained about TEPCO/IRID not releasing the entire video feed from this work. TEPCO tried to explain this away as it being trade secrets or nuclear security secrets but provided no detail to back up this claim.

The two new videos along with previous videos of this work and image stills can all be found here:
