Fukushima Daiichi Cleans Most Contaminated Water, Not Really

TEPCO announced that they have cleaned most of the contaminated water at Fukushima Daiichi. But the details show they are no where near close to being done.

Only cesium 137 & 134 along with strontium 90 have been removed from certain tanks of water. 620,000 tons of water have had these two isotopes removed. 10,000 tons of water currently can not be filtered for an undisclosed reason.

440,000 tons of water have now been run through ALPS with 180,000 tons still needing to be processed. Previous admissions showed that ALPS did not remove cobalt 60, iodine 129 and tritium among possible other isotopes.

TEPCO also began dismantling the H2 tank farm. It has not been mentioned how they will manage worker exposure doses during this dismantling. They did include a temporary cover on the tanks during the dismantling process. Many of these early tanks held highly radioactive sludge. There was no explanation in TEPCO’s handout about how they would remove or manage that sludge.

There has also been no plan announced for how they would deal with the hydrogen build up in the filtration canisters being stored on site that are part of the water filtering process. NRA said earlier last week that these canisters are producing hydrogen at levels that could lead to an explosion.
