Taiwan Implements New Oversight On Japan Food Imports
After the mislabeling scandal earlier in the year where Japanese food imports had falsified prefecture of origin labels, Taiwan’s new food oversight goes into effect this Friday.
The new rules were initially set to require a proof of radiation test results for certain foods and to be provided by Japan’s central government. The slightly modified rules will accept municipal radiation checks and checks from groups like chamber of commerce groups. Prefecture of origin proof will also now be required.
A number of Japanese politicians had been harassing Taiwan over the stepped up oversight, demanding they not implement the new standards.
Some products from these prefectures will now require proof of radiation screening results:
Miyagi
Iwate,
Tokyo
Ehime
Some of the food products flagged for more intense oversight:
Aquatic products
Tea
Baby food
Taiwan is the #3 importer of Japanese foods, behind Hong Kong and the US.
