Plans for a demonstration system based off of the Russian Triton tritium removal technology will begin construction early next year. Plans for the system were given approval by Japanese officials recently. If the demonstration unit proves useful a full scale system could be built at Fukushima Daiichi to remove the massive amounts of tritium from contaminated water.
GE-Hitachi and Kurion also have tritium demonstration projects in the works for Fukushima Daiichi but little information has been forthcoming about these systems or how they work.
These projects are a huge step forward and a partial success for the fishing and environmental groups that pushed for tritium laced water to not be dumped into the Pacific. Nuclear experts from various countries had urged Japan to not bother with tritium removal and just dump the water in the sea.
