IRID Completes Full Scale Fukushima Torus Model
IRID has completed a full sized model of the torus (suppression chamber) based on the damaged reactors at Fukushima Daiichi.
The model will be used to test various techniques to plug the torus and the related piping in a later attempt to flood the reactor containment vessels. This work is one attempt towards removing the melted fuel from the reactor containment.
The photo (left) shows the size of the suppression chamber tube (torus) vs. the workers seen in the photo.
How this huge model was built is documented in this English handout from IRID.
