Fukushima Car Washes Struggle With Radioactive Sludge

eco_nomicThe Japanese press is reporting a “new” problem in Fukushima prefecture. Sludge tanks at car wash facilities in the region have had sludge building up in their septic systems since 2011. Some of it has reached 57,400 bq/kg. In these last 5 years the various government agencies overseeing the disaster response did nothing to address this problem.

As pointed out in the Japan Times report, the high radioactivity in the sludge now makes removal a high risk operation. The sludge would be considered radioactive waste that requires proper handling and storage. This issue has also been shown to be a larger problem as radioactive soil and debris bags dot the landscape of eastern Japan, many are now failing. The government is still struggling to properly address this issue.
