Radiation Imaging Drone Introduced At Fukushima Daiichi
A new quadcopter drone has been introduced for use at Fukushima Daiichi. The RISER quadcopter is currently in use to visually map gamma radiation in the unit 3 turbine building.
This quadcopter is equipped with GPS, HD cameras and the N-Visage 3D gamma radiation detector. This technology produces color images of radiation. The technology has previously been used to examine the refueling floor of unit 2 and some other areas of the reactor buildings. This new application is a significant advance due to the capability of having a 3d gamma camera of such small size.
The quadcopter has a maximum radiation resistance of 10 mSv/hr so it won’t be deployed into the more dangerous areas of the disaster site. There was no mention if RISER will be available for sale to the general public but the applications for use are many.
