Fukushima Fuel Removal Model Unveiled
GE Hitachi and IRID have published photos and basic information about a new mock-up model for one of the Fukushima fuel removal concepts.
The mock up includes the equipment intended for use in the process to remove fuel debris and residue from the top of the reactor vessel. This process may not be capable of removing the bulk of the melted fuel but it will still be potentially useful for removing remaining residue and structures inside the reactor vessel.
The mock-up proves some of the basic concepts but was done without a situation that would resemble the needed radiation controls to prevent contamination from being released. The model allows the equipment concepts to be tested and modified before any attempt to do this in full scale in the challenging environment of the reactor buildings.
