Fukushima Reconstruction Minister Resigns

Reconstruction minister Masahiro Imamura has resigned after another insulting remark about people in Fukushima and the Tohoku region.

During a party held Tuesday in Tokyo, Imamura said “it was rather good” that the 2011 tsunami-quake disaster hit the Tohoku region and “not somewhere near the Tokyo area,” because it would have caused an “enormous amount of (financial) damage” to the country.

Imamura came under fire for other remarks made against Fukushima evacuees earlier in the month. His remarks were largely decried by the public both times. The comments seem to track with the policies of the central government towards evacuees and Tohoku in general. Imamura’s resignation does not seem to have caused anyone in the Abe Administration to reconsider any of their policies.
