Fukushima Unit 3 To Get Muon Scan End Of April
TEPCO published press handouts that there will be a muon scan of Fukushima unit 3 starting in May of 2017. Equipment installation is planned for late April 2017. Results will be available in “a few months”.
The equipment will be installed in the first floor of the unit 3 turbine building. The scan will be capable of viewing the bottom of the reactor vessel but not lower into containment.
A scan for unit 3 had been put off in previous years over concerns the radiation levels were too high to obtain an accurate scan.
The scan should be able to confirm if any fuel is left in the reactor vessel itself. If no fuel inventory of significance is found in the reactor vessel, unit 3 would be in the same category as units 1 and 2 where the location of the melted fuel is unknown.
