Fukushima Daiichi Reactors Suffer Containment Damage In Quake

A report published by TEPCO today shows new containment damage suffered by units 1 and 3 at Fukushima Daiichi as the result of the recent 7.3 earthquake in the region. TEPCO’s report showed that there was an abrupt drop in the water level at unit 1 on the 18th. Unit 3’s water level has been on a gradual decline since the 17th.

Unit 1’s water level dropped 40-70cm, 70cm = 27 inches. TEPCO cites that the temperature has been declining inside containment since the 15th but did not explain why the abrupt water drop took place days later.

Unit 3 dropped about 30cm. 30cm = 11.8 inches
Temperatures in containment began to decrease on the 14th.

Finding the location of these new leaks or the extent of the damage could be problematic. The suspect locations where connections to containment could fail are mostly in areas that require robotic equipment or a scope to inspect. Typically those kinds of inspections take months to plan.

TEPCO did not indicate that they consider this incident to be over. We will monitor for changes and post updates and more information is released.
