Chernobyl; Lab Looted, Shelling And Forest Fires
The authority in charge of the exclusion zone around Chernobyl is reporting that a radiation lab at Chernobyl has been looted by Russian forces. The $6 million dollar lab, largely funded by Europe had analytical equipment and highly radioactive samples stolen. The lab was looted in the early days of the invasion.
Forest fires have been detected in the exclusion zone. Ukraine normally fights these fires that ignite in the radioactive forests aggressively to prevent radioactive contamination from being released into the air. This fire-related contamination has been found as far away as western Europe when fires have broken out in the past. With the exclusion zone occupied by Russian invaders, fire crews can not enter or work to put out fires.
The nearby worker town of Slavutych has been subjected to frequent air raids. Today the town checkpoint was shelled by Russian forces. The town of Ivankiv, about half way between Chernobyl and Kyiv has been occupied by Russian forces since the initial invasion. Residents have been unable to leave or obtain basic supplies. Many of the town’s residents work at Chernobyl.
