Osaka Has Enough Signatures For Nuclear Referendum

A group in Osaka has collected enough signatures to start the referendum process for a public vote on the use of nuclear power in the city. There is still a process of approvals from the mayor and city assembly. Osaka recently saw sweeping elections that brought in a new mayor and a new prefecture governor who both were outside the old political parties and ran on a “no nukes” platform. So there is a good chance this referendum will be put to a vote of the people.

A similar group in Tokyo is having a harder time obtaining the needed signatures by their deadline. Tokyo needs 214,000 signatures compared to Osaka’s 50,000
