More Fishy Problems In Japan
Fish and seafood contamination after the Fukushima Daiichi disaster continues to be a problem. It certainly has not gone away as some claimed it would as the world watched the nuclear meltdowns leak into the sea.
The contamination did not just impact fish in the ocean. Fish in rivers and bodies of water have been found to have increasing levels of contamination. Fallout washes away and ends up in rivers contaminating fresh water fish and river sediment. Landlocked salmon in Tochigi, far outside the evacuation zone was banned from sale after being found with cesium in excess of 100 bq/kg. How much over is not declared.
Pacific cod from Aomori prefecture has been pulled from sale twice due to being over limit of contamination. Certain areas have fishing bans after too much contaminated fish has been found. Aomori is not currently under any fishing ban. Fishing bans can be found here. Yellow is voluntary no fishing, red banned from sale. One of the highest fish readings was from Miyagi prefecture in black sea bream at 3300 bq/kg
Problems with fish safety reach far beyond the area offshore in Fukushima. The government and the fishing industry have improved what they are doing to address it but there are clearly still many problems and a not yet understood evolution of the risks.
