Tsunami Debris Showing Up On US West Coast, NOAA Tracking What Arrives
Everything from soccer balls to motorcycles, boats and even a concrete dock have landed on North American shores as debris from the March 2011 tsunami floats across the Pacific. Most has been found in the northern reaches of Alaska and Canada but now debris is showing up as far south as California.
NOAA has provided some funding for states to deal with the debris but just dealing with the dock cost the state of Oregon an amount comparable to the entire NOAA budget for the project. NOAA gave Oregon $50,000 towards dealing with the dock.
States have developed a system of engaging mostly citizens to report what they find so governments can determine where things are landing and if it is beginning to create a problem.
NOAA has a tsunami debris tracking website that can be found here.
