Japan To Set Up Fallout Shelters For Residents Living Near Nuclear Power Plants

Japan’s nuclear regulator has announced the need for 50 fallout shelters for residents living near nuclear power plants. Some of Japan’s nuclear plants are built on peninsulas. Residents living on these peninsulas would be unable to flee during a nuclear disaster since they would have to drive near the plant to escape.

The solution? Fallout shelters. Public buildings like schools would be retrofited with air handling systems and blowers to attempt to remove radioactive substances before people enter. There were no specifics given what the alternative plan is if these facilities are destroyed or damaged by an event like an earthquake or tsunami.
