Typhoon Nanmadol To Hit Sendai Nuclear Plant
A historically strong category 5 hurricane is set to cross over the Sendai nuclear power plant in Kagoshima Japan. The storm may lessen to a category 4 by the time it hits the plant but NHK is describing this storm as historic and not seen in decades.
Peak wind gusts of 140 mph (220 kph) are expected along with significant storm surges. The plant has some particular problems with where it is situated. The intakes, pump buildings and the plant itself sit at a low level above the sea leaving them exposed to storm surge risks. Nearby roads are at risk from storm surge and landslides.
