Prosecutors Seize Fukushima Plant Chief Testimony, May Prosecute

Prosecutors investigating the Fukushima nuclear disaster have seized previous testimony of Fukushima plant chief Masao Yoshida. They attempted to interrogate him but his failing health prevented this.

Yoshida has been considered a hero by many for his defiant exchanges with TEPCO executives during the nuclear disaster as he struggled to bring the reactors under control. Yoshida pushed for actions to bring the plant under control such as venting and injecting sea water into the reactors among other things that executives in Tokyo were reluctant to do. Yoshida ended up injecting sea water in to the reactors in spite of executives telling him not to, they still held out hope they might be able to “save” the reactors to reuse them.

Prosecutors consider Yoshida’s previous years in charge of the plant to be part of the negligence complaint. After seeing the exchanges during the disaster it leaves one wondering how much say Yoshida really had in plant safety before the disaster.
