Abe Vows More Nuclear and Deregulation

Because the lack of regulation worked so well at Fukushima Daiichi, Japan PM Abe announced his plan to deregulate business in Japan. He cited government regulations and oversight as an impediment to business. Yet every investigation of the Fukushima nuclear disaster cited the lack of oversight and meaningful regulation as a considerable contributing factor to the disaster.

Abe also cited a plan to bring more women into the workforce to ease Japan’s woes. Abe announced the addition of more daycare centers by the government. What he failed to address is the extremely long hours workers are expected to put in at many Japanese companies. This expectation, even if it is an unwritten rule could keep more women from rejoining the workforce. Addressing this issue would benefit both men and women by allowing them to have time outside of work to actually be more involved parents.
