Unit 4 Fuel Removal Resumes Tuesday

NHK is reporting that TEPCO will continue the process to remove spent fuel from the unit 4 pool on Tuesday JST. The first run removed unused fuel and transferred it to the common pool nearby. This next effort will try to remove a group of spent fuel assemblies and transfer them to the common pool using the same process.

TEPCO cited problems with sand and sediment in the spent fuel pool causing visibility issues and will install a pump they hope will clean the water to improve visibility. The work to remove the spent fuel assemblies will take more caution than the removal of the unused ones. The main concerns are not damaging the fuel, something that could release radioactive gasses into the building.
