Polar Vortex Takes Out Ft. Calhoun Nuclear Plant
The unusually cold weather in the US midwest forced Ft. Calhoun nuclear plant to shut down a little over 2 weeks since it restarted for the first time since 2011. Ice in the intakes created a situation where they could not fully close the sluice gates, creating a situation where they have to shut down due to federal safety regulations. OPPD stated they will have to do some repairs to the sluice gates after the ice is thawed but did not elaborate on how long the outage would take. Ft. Calhoun has been the “little plant that can’t”.
