TEPCO To Resume Dumping Groundwater Into The Sea At Fukushima Daiichi

TEPCO has obtained permission from two local fishing cooperatives to dump contaminated groundwater into the Pacific. The cooperatives said they did want a third party to monitor the releases and radiation levels. It was not mentioned who would be that third party.

TEPCO insists that the water would have “below 1 bq/liter” of cesium. They didn’t mention here how much strontium 90 or tritium the water could contain but those would likely be below the legal limits that already exist for contaminated water releases. Since these will be daily releases even those government limits may not prevent a growing problem.

Monitoring wells near the ground water pumps have shown detectable levels of beta radiation that would include strontium 90 and tritium.
