Evacuees Gain Compensation For Voluntary Evacuation
A court in Kyoto has found in favor of an evacuee who left Fukushima prefecture for Kyoto but was not under an evacuation order. The man in his 40’s moved his family away from Fukushima but has struggled with PTSD and has been unable to work. The court granted provisional compensation for ongoing living expenses. It appears that is just a temporary measure as the courts work on determining any permanent compensation.
This ruling may open the door for others who fled or were unable to stay in their homes but have fallen outside the current compensation system. Namie evacuees recently accepted an arbitration body’s ruling to increase monthly compensation amounts. TEPCO has not confirmed they will also accept the agreement.
