5000 tons of Fukushima fish, scallops and king crab are estimated to have been smuggled out of Japan in the last two years into markets in China, and possibly beyond. The estimated value of the illegal seafood is 34.7 million USD.
The products were picked up in Hokkaido, sent to Vietnam for repackaging to remove evidence that they came from Fukushima Prefecture, then shipped to China and sold. It is unlikely any of these products were subjected to any sort of radiation testing. Officials became suspicious when they saw seafood products being sold far below typical retail prices. China still bans the sale of certain Japanese food products including seafood from Fukushima Prefecture. The Japanese government also still keeps bans on certain seafood products from Fukushima Prefecture.
This is not the first incident of repackaging and selling banned Fukushima food products outside of Japan. Taiwan had a similar scandal in 2015 that involved Japanese exporters and importers in Taiwan.
