Typhoon Melts Two Sections Of Fukushima Ice Wall

26350211385_0694bc17b4_bAsahi Shimbun reported that two sections of the underground ice wall at Fukushima Daiichi have thawed and failed two sections. TEPCO also admitted that this caused contaminated water to reach the area past the wall near the sea. 740 tons of groundwater were pumped out of the reactor block area yet the groundwater level increased 7cm due to the extreme rainfall.

TEPCO had not published any reports to their public system by the time Asahi Shimbun published the article. At the time the typhoon hit, 6 sections of the ice wall on the land side had still not been turned on. This has been a perplexing problem TEPCO has not addressed. Why they are considering the project to be struggling while multiple sections of the wall allowing groundwater to flow into the area are still out of operation.
