Commission Looks At Expanding Nuclear Evacuation Zones
The Nuclear Safety Commission looks at expanding the planned evacuation zones around nuclear power plants. The current zones are 10km. New zones would be a multi-stage zone.
5km = immediate evacuation in an accident.
30km = new evacuation zone.
50km = preventative action zone (to prevent internal exposure)
The residents in the 50km zone would be targeted for protective iodine tablet distribution. No word if they are also developing a better system for iodine tablet distribution and instructions to the public. During the early days of the Fukushima Daiichi disaster many at risk communities were not given any instruction or given the impossible instruction to only take the pills under doctor supervision, in a disaster zone amid the chaos.
The US is also considering expanding evacuation zones around nuclear power plants after learning how the public was impacted in Fukushima and surrounding areas.
