TEPCO Begins Draining Unit 2 Trench Of Radioactive Water

TEPCO has finally begun draining the Unit 2 trench of highly radioactive water. The trench was found to contain highly radioactive water soon after the initial meltdowns. Some minor effort was made at that time to plug some holes that allowed water to drain into the trench. Since that time nothing was done for years. Only in 2013 when the contaminated water leaks became a political issue did an effort to deal with the water standing in the trench begin.

Workers initially tried to freeze the end of the trench near the turbine building to prevent more contaminated water from leaking to the trench. When they failed to fully seal the trench end, workers began dumping concrete into the area. This is the first word of an effort to actually drain the trench. Earlier in the month TEPCO admitted they though the trench may be being fed from an unknown route.
