TEPCO Admits Unit 2 Trench Concrete Work May Be Failing

NHK reports that the work to concrete in the unit 2 trench may not be working as planned. The work so far concreted the tunnels but not the four vertical shafts that go down to the tunnels. When water was pumped out of one of the shafts the water level changed in another shaft. The immediate assumption was that the concrete in the tunnels had gaps. What wasn’t apparently considered was the previous admission by TEPCO that the bottom of this trench was covered in gravel, not concrete slab. This could cause water transfer under the trench itself. TEPCO insists once they fill the vertical trenches it may stop the problem. Yet no one seems to be considering the possibility that the entire contaminated water problem could exist beneath the trench itself.
